Once again its time to post some new photos from my favorite winter doldrum photo haunts, Larrabee State Park and Bellingham Bay. These locations are only a few miles from my home, so when I can’t get out on some winter ski trips I head to the local beaches for some fresh air and inspiration. These photos were made within a two day period when there was a lively mixture of sunny and stormy weather, a time during which you can usually get a wide variety of lighting conditions. To read more about Larrabee State Park check out this post from last year.

Just a short walk from my home is Whatcom Falls Park, one of the best urban green spaces around. Situated in Bellingham, Washington this park is home to a forest of giant old growth fir trees big leaf maple trees and a rushing creek that tumbles over five picturesque waterfalls. With a network of well maintained trails the park is very popular with walkers joggers bicyclists photographers and nature enthusiasts. In summer the cool waters of the creek is a popular destination for swimmers diving into the deep pools below the falls. Aside from walking my dog in the park several times a week I like to photograph the park in the spring when the forest is bursting with vibrant greens and in the fall when the Big Leaf and vine Maples turn golden. After a winter snowfall it’s also a great place to cross country ski, but more on that in a future post.

Squalicum Marina Bellingham, Washington

Squalicum Marina Bellingham, Washington: Last weekend I took advantage of some nice spring-like weather to photograph on the Bellingham waterfront. Arriving at the Squalicum Marina just before sunset the calm winds and glowing light enhanced the mood of the picturesque sailboats and fishing fleet. After the sun went down came a nice afterglow that bathed the scene in a soft even light, perfect conditions for photographing.

One of my goals this year is to add more travel oriented images to my files, and what better place to start than in my own backyard. Besides being a college town (Western Washington University) Bellingham hosts the southern terminal to the Alaska Ferry system and is a travel destination in it’s own right. To the east is North Cascades National Park to the west are the fabulous San Juan Islands and just an hour north is Vancouver and the Coast Range of British Columbia. We’re finally getting a nice break of spring-like weather today and tomorrow up here in Bellingham Washington. I’m planning on taking advantage of it by photographing on the Bellingham waterfront and Larrabee State Park. It sure is nice to live in such a photographically rich region!

Yesterday I took advantage of the post-rain overcast up here in Bellingham to stop by Whatcom Falls and see how the spring foliage was coming along. This year has been especially cool and rainy so there are many trees that are just starting to leaf out. However at the falls the greens were nice and vibrant and made for some fun photography.

Brett Baunton Exhibit in Bellingham

Bellingham Bay

If you’re in the Bellingham area during the holidays be sure to stop in at the Blue Horse Gallery in downtown Bellingham where you can view some outstanding landscape and nature photography by Brett Baunton. His prints will be on display there until December 31, 2009.

I used to work with Brett years ago at Prolab (now closed) in Seattle and since my move to Bellingham he has become my printer of choice. Besides his work in nature photography he operates ArtScan a digital printing and scanning business with his wife Denise Snyder, it’s conveniently located just above the Blue Horse Gallery. Even if you don’t live in the Bellingham area I would highly recommend his services.
